Hi! My dilemma is as the title says, my scarf is curling inwards from the edges. I'm crocheting a scarf using single crochets all the way through.

An added question: I tend to make my single crochets stiff, but if I loosen the tension, there will be holes in my scarf. How do I make the scarf fluffy and soft without compromising warmth?

For anyone that's interested, it's the vertical stripes type of scarf. =/

Hi everyone. :) For Christmas, I'm planning to sew a felt DS case for my brother similar to the one pictured under the cut (although his is going to be lime green, because that was his Gameboy Color's color). I don't expect that it will be too tricky. I've handsewn before, but always very simple projects. this is what I'm going for )

My biggest question is how to do the zipper. I'm clueless as to how I should sew it on. I googled, but the directions I got kind of confused me (yes, I feel really, really dumb right now). Is a beginner like me better of doing velcro, and if so, how do I do that? I'm also unsure about dimensions. I know I should make the main two felt squares a litlte big, but other than measuring his gameboy and then adding an inch or two to the felt sizes I'm stumped. So basically, some general tips on how to accomplish this would be great. :) And specific, easy instructions on how to do zippers by hand. A link is fine, if you know of one that will explain it well to a beginner. Thanks in advance!

Who is the gift for? My two grandmothers, and two of my aunts

What is the occasion? Christmas

List at least three of their interests: It's hard to say... I'd say they'd like just about any crafty/pretty thing I make for them. We're not really a share-our-feelings type of family, so anything very mushy or personal would feel sort of contrived.

Any stipulations or things to avoid: Should be something small and not too complex. I don't think they'd be interested in accessories.

What kind of crafting do you do? Embroidery, but I don't know that I'd have time for that. Painting and drawing.

Name some other crafts that you would be willing to try: I don't really have time to learn anything new, but if anyone could think of some kind of simple paper craft, I might be up for that.

Do you have a price range for materials? Cheap, $10 or so. I have a lot of supplies though, so I might not have to buy much anyway.

Do you have a time limit to make this present? From now until Christmas.

Any other information you'd like to include: If I do something with imagery, I'd like to do something with birds, flowers, old-fashioned things, etc. I know I wasn't very specific, but I don't have anything very particular in mind. I just need something pretty and easy.

It's easy, it's fast, it's for multiple purposes.

The idea sadly isn't mine. A fellow f-lister has received a bottle of this lovely combination of basic food groups and uploaded a picture.
Consequently I stole the idea.

It's easy:
Choose nice bottle of wine (or anything else, but wine seems most fitting). Peel of the label and scrub the bottle perfectly clean. Chill the bottle.
Choose chocolate (I took them all: white, dark, whole milk) and melt them carefully. Fill into pointed paper bag or a freezer bag and cut off the tip.
Apply melted chocolate on the bottle at will.

Chill again.

Wrap in some nice foil and give away.

To peel off the chocolate again (and eat with a nice glass of the wine in your hand) the bottle has to be very cool (freezer seems a good idea). The chocolate will be very hard then and peeling it off is half the fun.

I made those three today and gave one away immediately. Presentee was delighted, started to peel at an instant and might be drunk by now ;P

Have fun!

[info]lutine recently posted a link to instructions for making drink coasters with the mario characters on them. The guy who made them used the plastic beads you melt down using an iron. Surely she knows what Im referring to if no one else does, but I've searched high and low for it and I just cant find it! Getting annoying, can you help?

Beads made from pages of books. These would be cool if you took a piece of embroidery floss or cord about 10-12" long and added those and other beads to either end and knotted them in place. Voila! A string bookmark!

So, there's only one person I can't figure out who to get a gift for. I need a Christmas gift to give to my Aikido sensei. He's really into martial arts and Japanese things, but that seems to be obvious. I know he likes chocolate, cooking, video games, and snowboarding as well. I'm really at a loss. We've known each other for about 4 almost 5 years now. I want it to be meaningful in the sense that we have a close relationship between one another, but not too personal so that people might question our relationship. I'm usually pretty good with most crafts not involving tons of time or anything having to do with clothing. A low price range is good, but up to $20 - 25 isn't bad. And obviously I'm slightly pressed for time. Any takers?

I am planning on taking my boyfriend to the zoo (about 7 hours away from here) for Christmas. He's a herpetologist in training. I want to make it like a safari adventure so I was going to make him a book with scientific names of the animals and a space to put a picture. The idea is that he has to find all the ones in the book.

I was wondering if anyone else had any idea on how to make the book or any handmade gift idea to go along with this "safari" idea

Thanks to LJ spotlight, I found this comm a couple of days ago and am reading busily ever since. You guys have the greatest ideas!

I'm still trying to find the last present for my bf for Christmas. The plan was to stencil and/or write something on a tshirt for him as the slogans and band shirt designs available didn't really impress me.

His interests are: Japan/Japanese culture, history (especially Greek/Roman and anything about Marie Antoinette), rats, literature, crime TV (Bones, NCIS, Crossing Jordan, CIS, Life etc.), playstation 2/wii, Sims, the band Queen, and good food.

Any ideas? Pretty please?

Here are some photos of a gift that I made for someone I love ! It's a box that I made with pretty paper, using this tutorial. Then, I pasted snowflakes stickers on it and I filled the box with origami lucky stars. There are a lots of tutorials on how to make origami lucky stars, like this one. I bought the paper used in the box and the stickers in a Christmas crafting set and I bought the lucky stars stripes at a con and I printed some from this deviant's gallery. However I think that you can buy all of these online. Pictures ! )

So, I decided to knit my boyfriend mittens for this Christmas, as the last few weeks hes been talking about getting some cuz his hands are always cold.

The problem: He saw me making my grandmothers, and asked if I could make him some. I told him after Christmas, he then said he would just buy some cuz its getting too cold to go without mittens for very long. So, I had to fess up.

I still want some of his gift to be a surprise, so I need to make him something else as well. Im just not sure what to make him, Ive already made him a toque and quilt, and he doesnt wear scarves.

My skill set: knitting, sewing, drawing, painting

I just need one more idea and i am done!

So far:

Son: crochet sweater, crochet amigurumi veggies, door name plaque, 4 playdoughs

daughter: crochet hot pink sweater w/pink&purple flower pin, crochet Obama doll (lol - she loves him), door name plaque, 4 playdoughs

brother-in-law: heavy wool scarf

sister-in-law: mohair/silk/merino crochet hat w/flower, matching crochet mitered square scarf

mom: cotton crochet flapper hat w/flower pin, matching fingerless lace gloves, thread crochet earrings

sister: lanolized wool crochet flapper hat w/ribbon flower, mohair fingerless gloves, thread crochet earrings

husband: crochet hat, exploding box w/family photos, embroidered/beaded/appliques pic of our favorite beach at sunset... ???

i need one more thing for my husband!

he has a mostly desk job being a construction supervisor, he has to meet with clients all day. he is also on several boards of several institutions. he is a radio DJ (plays jazz) and a rock drummer. we already have several record bowls... ?? i am at a loss here.

i crochet, scrapbook, sew, embroider, applique, quilt, paint, draw, sculpt... i do just about everything crafty except glasswork *lol*

any other guy ideas out there??

I've been following this community since last year, and despite that, I'm still stumped on two gifts to make! eek!

Who is the gift for? boyfriend age 28
What is the occasion? Christmas
List at least three of their interests: video games-nintendo ds, wii,and tv-the office, lost, its always sunny in philadelphia etc., eco friendly stuff
Any stipulations or things to avoid (i.e., has to be something small, or they already have enough scarves, etc.): I can't knit too well, drawings/art to hang are out since I've done that the past few years
What kind of crafting do you do? LOTS of sewing! I can make patterns and draw as well. Felting, cooking, drawing, I do a lot except for knit and crochet.
Name some other crafts that you would be willing to try: Quilting, but it should be a quick project
Do you have a price range for materials? Not really, I have a lot of stuff around so I probably won't need to buy much anyway.
Do you have a time limit to make this present? By Christmas!
Any other information you'd like to include: I've already bought him a Nintendo DS game, as well as a solar charger for it (neat!) I'd really like to make him some items related to his DS in some way! He doesn't have a case, so I'm gonna do that, but I need some ideas on other things I can make that are sorta related. I'd like to follow a "theme"

Who is the gift for? my "crazy" cousin, age 29
What is the occasion? Christmas
List at least three of their interests: I don't honestly know her as well as I used to. Shes a nurse, likes to make up weird songs, funny things (how vague is that!) and most important...TURKEYS. Like, like white white turkeys specifically.
Any stipulations or things to avoid (i.e., has to be something small, or they already have enough scarves, etc.): again, just nothing knit or crochet
What kind of crafting do you do? LOTS of sewing! I can make patterns and draw as well. Felting, cooking, drawing, I do a lot except for knit and crochet.
Name some other crafts that you would be willing to try: easy stuff
Do you have a price range for materials? smaller would be good
Do you have a time limit to make this present? by Christmas
Any other information you'd like to include: OKAY, on Thanksgiving, she was talking about hatching a pet white turkey, I kid you not. I would love something clever that plays on that idea. She is older, but she still acts like a kid, so shes pretty great. Last year I made her skittles vodka and a scarf shaped like a skunk if that helps at all.

I sew pajamas and sweatshirts as a crafting business, so don't be afraid to suggest more advanced projects!
